There were a few non-rainy hours on Sunday afternoon, so we ventured out and drove to the end of the road that the campground is on - to South Jetty (the campground is "South Jetty RV and Camping Resort").
There is a Forest Service park just past the entrance to the campground. It seems to be mostly used by OHV (Off Highway Vehicles) on the dunes. We drove through the park to the area just beyond it at South Jetty - the breakwater at the south end of the Siuslaw River.
We could hear the ocean, but we couldn't see it - just over these dunes, we thought... |
It looks like other people have gone this way too... |
Uhm, we're at the top, and can't see ocean... maybe it is just over *that* set of dunes? |
Ah! There is the river - notice the waves coming in the river... |
And there's the Pacific, with the sun about to set (and it is really foggy/cloudy). |
In this part of the dunes, there weren't any footsteps since the last rainfall (of course, that was just earlier today...). |
As we got closer to the jetty and the river, I saw something black in the water... a sea lion? |
... zooming in ... no... not a sea lion... |
It was a surfer! |
Catching a wave! |
Hurrah - he caught it! |
Now, you may have noticed that Dwayne was bundled up (as was I)... I was wondering whether this guy had red gloves on or if it was his bare hands that red... he must be a pretty determined guy to be out surfing in this kind of weather, even with a wet suit on! He caught several waves while we were watching.

Dwayne heading out toward the jetty. |
Waves coming in up the river. |
A panoramic shot... the Pacific to the left, and the river to the right (with the Pacific in the distance). |
And one last picture as we were leaving. |
We were glad we had the opportunity to visit this area that was so near the campground, even though the weather while we were here was rather uninviting.
