We knew after seeing the "Texas" show on Wednesday evening that the cliff that is the backdrop for the show was visible from our campsite, so decided Thursday evening to watch for some of the activities that we knew we'd be able to see.

While we were waiting, I went over to the bulletin board at the restrooms. I had noticed that the Park Host campsite was right behind us in the campground, and that it was empty - One of the other RVers told me that he had seen a flyer indicating that camp host positions were available - any RVing friends interested in spending the summer Palo Duro Canyon in Texas? |
Other positions also available! |
The sun was setting over the canyon wall... I got a shot with the front of Miss Doozie in the foreground (and another RV beyond). |
And we saw the person on horseback with the Texas flag up on the cliff! (Well... you'll need to just believe me on this picture!) |
Dwayne had his long lens on the camera and on tripod - so he could zoom in... and we noticed that there were actually two riders... |
Zooming in some more - you can see the second rider on the right. We could probably see the riders when they were further from the edge - before the folks in the amphitheater because we were further away from the base of the cliff. |
Another view of the two riders... I don't know if you can tell or not, but I am pretty certain they are both female riders. |
And there she goes, galloping along the edge of the cliff! |
One of my Facebook friends and former IBM colleague, Nancy, grew up in Canyon, TX and participated in the production during college (I guessed that she had played an instrument, but she said that she worked in the ticket booth). She said that at that time, the horse and rider went up the cliff about an hour before the show started, and you could see them going up if you knew where to watch and when. We didn't see that - I was wondering whether there was a "back way" up there. One of the other RVers in the campground (a couple) said that they had hiked a trail up there while they were staying at the park - they seemed to say that the trail started around the overlook area that we had visited in order to take pictures.
(Spoiler alert) Later in the show there is a "thunderstorm" with a huge "crack" of lightning that splits a tree. We were talking with other RVers outside our rigs when that happened - we all jumped - it was neat how the sound reverberated off the canyon walls. The other couple said that they had been in their rig a couple of nights previously and thought that an actual lightning bolt had hit nearby as the weather was "threatening". (That was before they had seen the show and did not know that it was part of the production.)
