Before we get to Thursday... on Wednesday evening, we were enjoying the beautiful weather and views from our site on the Canyons side of Dinosaur National Monument. We kept on hearing cattle bellowing, so we got binoculars to see if we could locate them.
The cattle were somewhere down there... |
They were a good distance away, but with the binoculars, we spotted them, and then with Dwayne's long lens, he got some pictures...
Not too easy to see... |
I zoomed in using the computer and you can see him a little better - not a cow, but a deer - we were able to see the sunlight glinting off his white parts. |
We think that the cows were mostly down in gullies where there might have been water, but we did see a couple up "top"...
A black baldy cow and calf... |

We weren't sure why they were bellowing - we couldn't see any issues... I wonder how the herdsmen get them up when they need to - to move to another field or to market. They are on huge pieces of land it looks like - and they would need lots of land based on the sparseness of feed on the land.
I noticed that the "Boundary Line" for the National Monument was marked on the fence that was behind the bus where we were parked - so we were outside National Monument land. |
On Thursday, we left our solitary spot just outside the National Monument, and made our way west to Jensen, Utah. (Miss Doozie collected another state - only Michigan is missing from the lower 48!) We stopped at the post office in Jensen to collect our package of mail that I had ordered and which had been sent last week from our mail forwarding service to General Delivery at the post office. Then we made a stop at the Utah Welcome Center to pick up some information about things we might want to see and do,
When we got back to the bus, Miss Kitty was either adjusting the clearance lights or enjoying the sunshine - maybe a little of both! |
Finally, after our "errands" were completed, we headed in to Dinosaur National Monument on the Utah (Dinosaur Quarry) side.
About 1/3 of the campsites at Green River Campground are available for reservations, and the other 2/3 are available for walk-up guests. We have found that selection at "walk up" available campsites tends to be best if you avoid arriving on Friday or Saturday - thus our determination to leave our wonderful solitary spot on Thursday. When we got into the campground, we had a list that I had made of the sites that were supposed to be long enough to accommodate Miss Doozie, and we found one that was easy to access and had good cell signal - and it happens to be right near the river too!
A short stroll brought us to the river... |
It looks like someone has made a protected wading area. Across the river is private property. It looks like they do irrigated farming in this area of Utah. |

Miss Doozie and the Jeep in site 77 at Green River Campground. |
It is quite warm at this location (low 90s F) - we are about 4800' (compared to 7500' at our previous location), and we're down in a canyon, so the heat bakes in. We're boondocking here too - though there is a restroom right across from us and water that we can access (but not for filling tanks, unless we do it by buckets). So, we had the awnings out against the western sun and needed to use the generator to power air conditioners for a while in the afternoon.
One of Miss Doozie's cousins (a '95 Bluebird) is in the park - actually it belongs to one of the camp hosts. |
We're looking forward to exploring this side of the park - but will try to do it in the morning before the day gets so warm.
