More about Zuri

A couple of months ago, I posted about Zuri (http://trekincartwrights.blogspot.com/2019/07/zuri.html)...

Well, Zuri was missing from campus for a few weeks as he was attending school... I guess Louis and Martha decided Dallas International University (DIU) wasn't exactly the school he needed.
While he was away, I happened to be walking through the building where his human has his office, and noticed that Zuri has a name plate at the office!
The doggie school provided pictures while he was away:
Zuri is on the far right - with his brothers from the same litter...

And with his sisters too!

Zuri has returned to the campus. He has grown a LOT, starting to look like his ears fit his body! His trainer came by to work with Louis and Martha and to understand our environment to better help him out.

Family visit!

My niece let me know a couple of weeks ago that they would have a layover at DFW so I arranged to meet up with them outside the secure area...
I got to meet Master Evan for the first time!

At 14 months, he is on the move...

And has quite the personality too!

Let's get lots of walking done so when we get back on the airplane, it can be nap time!

Such a cutie!
He is walking on his own, I just didn't get any pictures showing that... And he even asked to be passed to me to hold a couple of times!

It was great to get to see family!

North Texas Giving Day

One of the last items on Johanna's to-do list before her retirement (http://trekincartwrights.blogspot.com/2019/09/johannas-retirement.html) was to get the International Linguistics Center onto the North Texas Giving Day.

The North Texas Giving Day is on September 19 this year - but it is open to scheduled donations starting today, September 9. You don't need to be in North Texas to give!!!

Texas State Inspection

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago about taking the Jeep to get it inspected (and not being able to complete it because the "codes" could not be read since the battery had been disconnected earlier in the day).  http://trekincartwrights.blogspot.com/2019/08/getting-things-done.html
I successfully got the Jeep inspected the next weekend (with no additional charge), and I verified with them that they would be able to do the Texas State Inspection on a large motorhome. I had already checked the entrances and exits to the parking lot to make sure that I thought Miss Doozie would be able to enter and exit without dragging front or back.

On Thursday during devotions, I asked if someone would help me by checking the brake/running/turn signal lights on the back of Miss Doozie. I remembered that Dwayne had often needed to clean the contacts on one of the lights to keep it working well, and I wanted to be sure that was working before I took it to get inspected. Two of the fellows from the RV park came over, and they found that one of the lights worked sometimes but not always (I think it worked when I put the brake on, but not if I had the brake and turn signal on). They asked if I had a replacement bulb, and I said that we had previously just cleaned the contacts - they wanted to try that and see if it worked, so I opened the engine compartment and they took the bulb out, cleaned the contacts, replaced it, we re-tested, and all was working - Praise God!

I decided I should go ahead and take it to the shop for the inspection (this issue with the bulb not always working seems to come back and I didn't want to wait for a couple of weeks and have it re-appear), so I called the shop on Saturday morning and they said that they could take it - I verified where they wanted me to park the behemoth...
... I got to the shop and parked it out on the side of the shop where they had recommended. I felt like the 50,000 pound gorilla blocking part of the driveway past the side of the building, but there was still one lane that could get by...
One of the workers was coming out to the bus as I got out - I handed him the registration papers and my proof of insurance. He wanted the mileage, so I went back to the bus and got that, and took it into the shop to him. I had asked if I could stay on the bus as I had a cat and didn't want her to get loose, and they had told me that was okay. I was just readubg some things on my phone when the fellow showed up at the door and said that it was all done, and the cost would be $7. He handed me the completed inspection report, and I went into the office and paid the $7....

Note that, as far as I know, no one checked the lights or tires or anything... we had a similar experience in January when we had the Texas State Inspection done on Miss Doozie when we arrived in Houston (http://trekincartwrights.blogspot.com/2019/01/south-main-rv-park.html). In both cases, they saw me drive up in the bus, they saw that it stopped when I put on brakes, I guess they may have seen the running lights in the front when I arrived (but I don't think they could have seen brake lights and would not have seen turn signals). Miss Doozie looks like a well-maintained unit... maybe there aren't very stringent requirements? Whatever the case, I got a "pass" on the state inspection, so I not have submitted the payment for my registration online and should be getting the updated stickers for both vehicles in the next few weeks... and I'm thankful to have this behind me! I am also so thankful for helpful brothers in the Lord who helped me check the lights and helped me ensure that they were working (in case they had been checked!).

Johanna's retirement

I have been blessed to get to meet and know Johanna while here at the ILC. She has been here 14 years, previously was a radio host on KCBI in Dallas where I first had gotten to "know" her in the past. She is retiring, and we had a celebration to honor her on Thursday...
Mark showing Johanna the cake with the blessing on it...

... and the tears begin...

Vanay and Johanna share a hug...

Pete shares words of wisdom...

I was *very* impressed with Mary slicing the cake without slicing Iris...

... nor did Miss Iris get either hands or feet into the cake!

Many people shared about Johanna - from all different segments of her very richly lived life...

And Johanna seemed to enjoy and appreciate all, though lots of tissues were used!
I will certainly miss Johanna being here on the center. I'm praying that God will bless and keep her and continue to use her according to His will!

Some of my co-workers

A couple of weeks ago, some of my co-workers participated in a missiological reflection on community -- at the end of their session, they asked (since I was at the Welcome Desk) if I would take a picture of their group for them to include in their newsletters - so I got to have the pictures too!

Miss Iris helps out with welcoming people at the Welcome Desk...

Some of my co-workers - Mary (Iris's mom), Jill, Vanay, Doug, and Kathy -- in discussion...

And more posed!
I work with such a great group of folks. I am so thankful that God found me this place to be!

Seeing the results of one's labor...

A lady that I have come to know on campus came through the area by the Welcome Desk a couple of weeks ago... she had noticed the New Testaments that were on display in the lobby and wondered if the New Testaments that she had been privileged to work on were there. She had worked in Niger, and knew that 3 New Testaments have been completed. We looked on the shelves and did not see the country of "Niger" listed, but when I looked up Niger in the printed list of the copies displayed, it indicated that two were there. We thought that they might be behind the wooden part of the doors and not able to be seen, but... I got a step stool and went up to be able to see the shelf...
...and there they were - not quite behind the wooden part of the door.
Since Niger only has two New Testaments on display, there wasn't a country label on the shelf, but the New Testaments are there!
In Fulfulde and Tamajaq!
She was happy to see these, and promised to find out if the 3rd New Testament has been published and try to ensure that we have a copy!

What a blessing to see the fruits of one's labor!
