Back to Texas for a few days

We have tickets to see "Texas" in Palo Duro Canyon on Wednesday, so we've returned to Texas for a few days.
The route we took to get to Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge took us on US 60 for a short distance - I grew up just off of US 60 (in Virginia) so this is like being home, right?

I had read about Buffalo Lake National Wildlife Refuge on the web - I thought that they might allow RVs, but wasn't sure so I had emailed to check. I got a response that RVs were allowed, but that it is primitive (no hookups, boondocking), but that's OK as long as it isn't TOO hot at night!

Looks like a nice lake, huh?

Oh well... no lake here now...

Miss Doozie at the sign-in site (Dwayne is in the shed signing us in).

With Dwayne's Golden Age Passport, we can stay here for free! The guy who emailed me warned me that we could leave the refuge between 8pm and 8am but could not re-enter! Curfew! It is a mile or so from where our campsite is to the gate... so if we got back after 8pm, we'd have a hike to get to our bed!

We drove through the camping area, only one other site was occupied (by a tent). We found a site that had a wee bit of shade - some of the branches were a little low and dead so Dwayne did some cleanup.

She is in a little bit of shade! That will help a little with the heat!

The "lake" would have been back there behind us...

It is a pretty nice place to stay! We decided to leave the front cover on the Jeep since we are just going to be here overnight.

Views out behind Miss Doozie...

It looks like they may have have done a controlled burn of the area just behind the campsites; the ground is blackened but the growth there is greener.

"The skies at night, are big and bright.... Deep in the heart of Texas..." - and in the daytime too!
It is right at about 100F here this afternoon, but supposed to cool down to high 50s overnight. We turned the generator on (it needs to run for an hour or so every month as regular maintenance/exercise) and have the air conditioning on to cool down the bus inside. Outside, in the shade, with a nice breeze, it isn't too bad!
