Meadows Campground - in Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests & Thunder Basin National Grassland

Since we did not have internet access at Dutch George campground, I was working off of data that I had saved on where we might stay for Wednesday night. The Days End Directory had indicated that, although the Walmart in Steamboat Springs would not allow overnight stays in their parking lot, the Safeway did, so had that in my plan. But, it also indicated that there were a couple of National Forest campgrounds, so decided to try one that was just a little ways beyond the Continental Divide pass that we crossed on Wednesday, Meadows Campground.

We drove into the campground and decided to unhook the Jeep and drive around the loops as we weren't sure whether Miss Doozie would be able to navigate them or not. We drove around one loop and found a couple of sites where she would fit (all the sites were empty), and then headed to the other loop - there was a tent in one of the sites, and a small motorhome in the camp host site. The guy at the motorhome was outside, so we stopped to ask if there was any site that he recommended for us (like Robert, the camp host at Dutch George, had recommended a site for us) - but he quickly told us that they were not the camp host, they had just come in and selected that site for where they parked. They also let us know that there were no pay envelopes at the pay station.

So, we headed back to Miss Doozie and took her to the site we had selected on the first loop.

The information in the Days End Directory indicated that one of the loops was closed in the summer of 2017 as they were taking down dead trees to avoid the hazard of falling trees in the campground.

As the folks parked in the camp host site indicated, there were no pay envelopes. We have been thinking that a camp host or ranger might come by and we would pay them... otherwise, we can just put the payment into an envelope and into the pay box before we leave.

Our campsite - we chose one near the top of the hill - it is very pretty all around us.

There was still snow in a few places, so we thought Miss Kitty might want to experience snow... she didn't...

But she did enjoy rolling in the dirt...

...and walking through flowers.

This warning label was on the picnic table about bears.
Dwayne collected some of the firewood that was indicated as available for use and built a fire.

He seems to be pleased with it!

We have been noticing the smell of coolant when the rig gets hot. We have two potential sources for the smell -- the Aquahot system (heater and hot water) and the radiator. We found that the Aquahot was low on fluid so looked for leaks associated with that but haven't found any. When we were traveling on Wednesday, when we stopped at the Jim Wright Reservoir, we noticed that the smell was particularly strong in the back of the bus. So, Dwayne wanted to check the hose that attached near the cap of the radiator...

... he was doing that Thursday afternoon... I got a picture of him and the meadow around us.

He is working on the hose that hooks in next to the radiator cap.

Back together and putting the cap back on.

Another fire on Thursday evening!

Dwayne splitting some firewood with his small hatchet. It was not easy to split!
Three more RVs came in on our loop on Thursday. We invited the folks who parked across from us to join us and they did so we had a nice chat around the fire.
