Devils Tower

We traveled in to Wyoming today (Miss Doozie collected another state!), going past Devils Tower on our way to Gillette, WY to the Walmart for the night.
We caught our first sight of the tower from several miles away...
Dwayne's super-powered lens got it a little closer...
View from the parking lot of the visitor's center

Dwayne was trying out the example of how the climbers use the crevasses in the rock to hold on and travel upwards.
Can you see any climbers in this picture?

I think there were 4 or 5 climbing - I added arrows pointing to where I think I can see 4 of them...
Maybe you can pretend to see them with it zoomed in!
At the visitor's center, they said that the record is 18 minutes to climb to the top. Let's just say that the record was not being broken today!

Another side of the tower - we took the 1.3 mile path around the base.
A view from the trailhead of Joyner Ridge Trail... Dwayne's camera with his super-powered lens

He zoomed in to see a climber - on the top of that diagonal part of the column near the middle of the photograph.
We both enjoyed our visit, but both agreed that we were glad that we had not paid the exorbitant campground rates to stay at commercial properties just outside the park. A few hours was sufficient for us to see what we wanted to see.

We drove on to Gillette where we're stopped at the Walmart. We both got our hair cut at the salon inside Walmart, and I got a pedicure. We plan to arrive in Casper tomorrow, checking in with the other Bluebirds at the fairgrounds in preparation to see the eclipse one week from today!
