Crossing the Pecos

On our way from Hondo to Langtry, we crossed the Pecos River. This river was a great barrier to travelers as it had a very deep canyon and was very treacherous to cross. When the railroad crossed it in 1892, it changed western travel completely.

Uhm, ok...
We stopped to get pictures - walking back across the bridge... gorgeous - but, really, would anyone really consider diving from the bridge? And, if they would, would a sign prohibiting it stop them???

Beautiful canyon - looking up river (north)

Looking downriver - you might be able to detect picnic shelters on the top on the other side - left of center. I think that is where the plaque commemorating the driving of the "silver spike" (connecting the railroad from the east and west) was driven. The Rio Grande is further downstream.

We noticed something moving down beneath...

It was a goat wondering what those people were doing on the bridge! Maybe he reports on people planning to dive from the bridge?

There's Miss Doozie where we left her on the western side of the bridge.
Onwards to Langtry!
