Mustang Island State Park

We decided that we wanted to stay a couple of nights at Mustang Island State Park. We had purchased a Texas State Parks pass in December, 2014, when we stayed at Balmorhea State Park (http://trekincartwrights.blogspot.com/2014/12/balmorhea-state-park.html). For $70, you can enter any Texas State park without paying the entrance fee (for Mustang Island, that would be $10/day), and you get 4 "coupons" associated with the membership card that allow you to have 1/2 price campsite for the second day of a 2-day (or longer) stay. After buying the pass in December, 2014, we didn't end up using the 4 coupons - in 2015, we sold Miss Daisy, bought Miss Doozie, and were getting the house emptied out... so we didn't end up staying at Texas State Parks. We decided to get another Texas State Park Pass here - we'll get two days of park entry fees ($20), plus half price on the second night of camping ($20/night, so saves $10). That means we've gotten $30 of value for our $70 so far... we are thinking that we may stop in some other Texas State Parks on our way west and then when we return in the spring... hopefully we'll do better on getting the full value!

We had visited Mustang Island State Park on our 1992 "epic journey around Texas" - I posted pictures of our two dads walking on the beach here (http://trekincartwrights.blogspot.com/2016/11/a-couple-more-pictures-from-our-epic.html).

After getting into our campsite, we decided to take a walk to the beach. It is really beautiful here, breezy, and just a bit warm today (high 70s- low 80s). There are dunes between our camping area and the beach, but a short walk down the campground takes you to the road to the parking lot that is right at the beach.

Dwayne was taking pictures with his phone too!

Looking straight out

Looking south "down" the beach

There are a set of piers in the water and on the beach just down there - and you might be able to see a car coming out onto the beach down there. You can drive down the beach in that direction - we took the Jeep down there on Saturday. It is supposed to be solid enough to take an RV down and camp down there... but we wouldn't do it with Miss Doozie!

Beautiful waves

Mesmerizing waves
We are working on memorizing James 1 right now, and had just gotten to verse 6, "...but let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind." We worked on our memory verses while we were out there watching the "waves of the sea driven and tossed by the wind".

The campsites here are "interesting". They aren't quite deep enough for Miss Doozie, but the road through is very very wide, and people seem to park out in front of their rigs and there is still plenty of room to drive through. The thing that is odd though is that there are two sites right next to each other, and then two picnic tables. So... in this picture, the picnic table to the left is for the empty site next to us - but, if someone was in that site, if they backed in (which would be "normal", their "off" side of the rig would be next to their picnic / patio area.

This shows the paired site to our site - you can see that if someone was in there, their "public" side of their rig would be very close to us, and they would have to walk around their rig to get to their picnic table. We had decided that if we were in one of those sites, we would pull in, and have to run our electric and water to the hookups that would then be at the front of the bus, but our door would have let us out in our patio and picnic table area. Motorhomes would have the ability to do that, but trailers and 5th wheels pretty much have to back in.
We are looking forward to our two nights here (may extend to a third) and then we're thinking we will head for Padre Island National Seashore.

We have "ok" cell service here - 4G for data but just 1 bar for cellphone. We might put our Wilson Cellular booster up to see if that helps any for our service.

When we were at Padre Island on Saturday, we were seeing no signal at all for most of the places we visited - so if we end up going there later this week, we may be out of contact for a couple of days.
