Sunrise on Cadillac Mountain

At certain times of the year (we don't think right now is one of them), Cadillac Mountain is the first part of the US that the sun hits in the morning. Regardless of whether now is that time or not, it is a popular thing to go to watch the sunrise. We had been told to go 1-1.5 hours before sunrise, and sunrise was at 5:07am this morning, so, needless to say, we were up and going a LOT earlier than normal!

The sky was brightening even as we got there at about 4am.

Just as the sun was peeking over the horizon - wow - look at those clouds!

More of the sun showing...

It is fully up now!

We had noticed a couple that were a little to the side and in front of us (the guy reminded us of a friend from Dallas). After the sun had risen, he got down on one knee and proposed! It appeared that she said yes - kinda neat to "share" that with the other 100+ folks who were there!

The land across the bay is Schoodic Point on Schoodic Peninsula, where we went yesterday. Not as foggy today! http://trekincartwrights.blogspot.com/2016/07/acadia-national-park-schoodic-peninsula.html

I mentioned a few days ago that we hadn't gotten to the point in the CD that explained why Cadillac Mountain was named that (http://trekincartwrights.blogspot.com/2016/07/moved-to-trenton-maine-and-started-our.html). We actually got the answer when we drove to the top of it a couple of days ago, but I forgot to report - it seems that someone thought that the names of the mountains in this area were rather bland, so he went about naming a number of them... and "Green Mountain" became "Cadillac Mountain", named after Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. Cadillac owned part of Mount Desert in the late 1600s, before founding what would become Detroit, Michigan, in 1701. His name and coat of arms were used on the car brand that bears his name.
