The Turkey Hill Experience - corrected

Correction: I had copied in the "Fun Facts about Cows" from the picture I took at the Turkey Hill Experience, but my brother corrected me on the information about cow's teeth - while it is true that they do not have top teeth in the front (and do have the dental pad on top), they do have top (and bottom) molars. I figured Turkey Hill Experience knew their cow facts!!! I've sent them a message on Facebook too, so maybe they will correct their display.

Turkey Hill is a local dairy and also a local convenience store (7-11 type store) in Pennsylvania. They also have the "Turkey Hill Experience" to allow visitors (primarily kids) to enjoy learning about their products, as well as being able to create their own ice cream flavors.

We enjoyed trying different flavors of beverages and ice creams while we were there.

Some Fun Facts about Cows:
  • Cows have 32 teeth - all teeth are on the bottom, with a dental pad on the top.
  • Before milking machines were invented in 1894, farmers could only milk about 6 cows per hour. Today, farmers use machines to milk more than 100 cows per hour.
  • It takes less than five minutes to milk a cow using a milking machine.
  • Cows are milked 2 or 3 times per day.
  • Cows are ruminants, which are cud chewing mammals. Sheep and camels are also ruminants.
  • A cow chews her cud (regurgitated, partially digested food) for up to 8 hours each day. That's almost 30,000 chews daily!
  • Dairy cows give over 7 gallons of milk each day. That's 112 glasses of milk!
  • Cows are referred to as the foster mothers of the human race because they produce most of the milk that people drink.
  • The first cow in America arrived in Jamestown colony in 1613. Until the 1850's, nearly every family had its own cow.
  • The first regular shipment of milk by railroad was between Orange County, New York and New York City and began in 1841.
Famous cows of the world:
  • Elsie the Borden Cow: The unofficial mascot of the Borden Company, now primarily used to promote the Borden dairy products from the Dairy Farmers of America.
  • Clarabelle: Created by Disney Studios in 1928, she is Horace Horsecollar's girlgriend and one of Minnie Mouse's best friends.
  • Ada the Ayrshire: Cartoon cow in early Farm Journals.
  • Elm Farm Ollie: In 1930 she was the first cow to fly in an airplane.
  • Mrs. O'Leary's Cow: She was said to have kicked over a lantern on the evening of October 8, 1871, thus starting the Great Chicago Fire, an act for which she has since been exonerated.
  • The Laughing Cow: Advertising mascot of Laughing Cow cheese.
  • Lani Moo: Since 1921, advertising mascot of Hawaii Gold Meadow Dairy.
  • Little Witch: World's fastest race cow; she won the 2004 World Wide Cow Racing Association's Udder Race running a mile in 9:18:12.
  • Pauline: President Taft's cow, the last cow to lie at the White House.
  • Minnie Moo: A famous Holstein cow at Disney World whose claim to fame was having spots shaped like Mickey Mouse on her side.
  • Chatty Belle: World's largest talking cow; in Neillsville, Wisconsin.
  • Penny the Cow: Locally known as the educational cow at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
  • Turkey Hill Cow: The famous traveling mascot of Turkey Hill.

 Cream Top Bottles:
Before homogenization, an expanded neck milk bottle called the "cream top bottle" was used to separate cream from the milk.
Turkey Hill Dairy provided customers with a special spoon which could be used to close the opening at the bottom of the neck. This allowed the cream to be poured out separately.
The separated cream in the top of the bottle was so pure it would quickly whisk up to a batch of rich, fluffy, homemade whipped cream!

Flavors available the day we were there included: Vanilla, Chocolate, Firecracker!, Black Cherry, Choco PB Cup, Deep Dark Choco, Moose Tracks, Party Cake, Orange Grove, Blood Orange
We could get as many sample dishes of ice cream as we wanted - and they were each nearly a full scoop of ice cream. The kids who were there were all on *major* sugar highs!

In the giftshop they had "Turkey Hill Experience" hard hats - Dwayne thought Jimmy might need one to help avoid injuries from hitting his head on various parts of Miss Doozie - but they seemed to only be in kids sizes...
